Hacienda, 1993
Textile on Silver Print
| Masayesva is a gadfly about reminding us that history is biased and distorted and that the line between cultural appreciation and appropriation is often hazy. Reacting to the "celebration" of Columbus' arrival, he reworked the "encounter" in Hacienda, a black and white photograph of a crumbling Spanish hacienda printed in washed-out tones. Masayesva glued cheap black lace with a rose pattern on top of the print which seems to be overwhelming the columns and balconies of the old mansion like a cancer. |
